  1. Lacking one or more elements of a working
  2. immune system. Immune deficiency is the term
  3. generally used for patients who are born with
  4. such a defect, while those who acquire such a
  5. deficiency later in life are referred to as
  6. immunocompromised or immunosuppressed. A
  7. serious impairment of the immune system is
  8. sometimes known as SCID, or Severe Combined
  9. Immune Deficiency. At one time such children
  10. would have died in infancy. They can now be
  11. kept alive in a germ-free environment, then
  12. treated with a bone-marrow transplant from a
  13. relative, to replace the missing immune
  14. cells. At present, the success rate for this
  15. type of treatment is still fairly low.
